What Is a Roof Soffit?
A roof soffit is the horizontal or slanted surface located beneath the roof’s overhang. It serves both an aesthetic and functional purpose, covering the rafters and providing a neat, finished appearance to the roof edge.
More specifically, it is the underside board fitted beneath the roof overhang, between the exterior wall and the fascia board. You can think of the soffit as the ceiling of your eave — the part you look up at when you are standing close to your house.
The soffit does not work alone. It sits directly alongside the roof fascia — the vertical trim board that runs along the roof edge and anchors your gutters — and together these two components form a protective roofline system that shields your rafter tails and attic from the elements.
Vented vs. Non-Vented Soffits
Soffits come in two basic forms: solid (non-vented) and vented.
- Solid soffits cover and protect the eave but allow no airflow. They are primarily decorative and are sometimes used on portions of a roofline where ventilation is handled by other means.
